So far Turkalo has identified some 2,500 elephants at Dzanga Bai—including 50-year-old Emma and her offspring —and chronicled their lives and behavior. Yet with poachers slaughtering elephants for their tusks—and no guarantee that the international ban on the sale of ivory will continue—she can’t help looking over her shoulder. “Dzanga is like a miracle,” she says. “But without protection, all this could perish in a very short time.”
